Apprentice Systems Administrator

Apprenticeship level: Advanced Level 3 (A level). Weekly wage: £337.50. Total hours per week 37.50. Based in Wroughton, Swindon.

The role of the Apprentice Systems Administrator is to monitor and support the external and internal IT infrastructure. The successful candidate will be supported and trained to allow to achieve this using a wide range of tools and processes. As skills and experience grow the candidate will be given increasing responsibilities and more exposure to the more advanced technologies.


Internal Network

  • Proactively monitoring all servers usage levels and health, ensuring optimum health.
  • Provide technical support for hardware and software issues, fault finding and repairing if possible, sourcing and providing replacement parts if required.
  • Keep clear documentation of hardware and software purchases including purchase dates, costs, licenses, and where applicable destruction date.
  • Setting up new computers and equipment, ensuring all relevant software and settings have been correctly applied/installed.
  • Jira Server administration - troubleshooting and support for users.  Developing or sourcing improvements if required.
  • Identifying areas to automate where possible.
  • Windows update installation for servers and end users.
  • VPN support.
  • Maintain Avaya telephone PBX switch and associated ISDN lines, arranging support with vendor if required.
  • Migration and setup of phones for new and existing staff.
External Network
  • DNS and firewall configuration.
  • SSL installation and renewal.
  • HMail server ongoing configuration and support of emails for both customer websites and Elcome applications.
  • Silvershield SFTP ongoing configuration and support.
  • Proactively monitor server usage and identify potential future issues using New Relic monitoring.
  • Adhere to Elcome backup policies ensuring regular ‘housekeeping’ of old backups.
  • Active directory maintenance and configuration.
  • Working with Vendors to plan improvements/expansion/migration.
  • Maintain PCI compliance.
  • Windows update installation.
Staff Support
  • Internal Active directory configuration and maintenance.
  • Azure active directory configuration and maintenance.
  • Office365 administration and support.
  • Windows 10 and 11 administration.

The Candidate

  • Excellent verbal and written English
  • Some knowledge of computers software and hardware
  • Problem solving skills
  • Positive attitude
  • Approachable and a team player
  • Good grades in English and Maths GCSE, or equivalents, grade A*-C/9-4
  • Any IT qualifications level 2
Future Prospects
  • Progression to a systems administrator after apprenticeship which will lead to systems administrator.

  • Located in a converted barn at the edge of Wroughton. 

  • Within walking distance of a bus stop that has regular buses.

  • Free parking

  • Free tea/coffee, there is a kitchen in the office, but no canteen. 

  • A games room is available at lunch that contains a pool table, music and a darts board. 

New College

  • Need to be able to attend New College Queens Drive Campus Swindon one day a week

  • You will need to complete pre-screening paperwork and have a chat with New College to discuss any experience, interest in the apprenticeship and how it is delivered

  • You will need to complete initial assessments in Maths and English
